Useful background information to our work
There are endless studies that prove how important a viewing and touching of a dead body is to the grieving process. It is said to allow the feelings of the bereaved come to terms with death. In fact, a number of studies of the grieving process have actually shown that where denying the significance of death occurs by for example not viewing a body of a loved one, that this can have a detrimental effect on a grieving persons state of wellbeing and can manifest itself to an intolerable level of grief. Being in the Funeral industry for over 40 years, we at Mortuary Services fully understand that families will want to view their deceased loved one prior to the funeral therefore it is important that their loved one is presented in the best possible condition at such a critical time.
Why hygienically treat a deceased body?
One of the main reasons why a body is hygienically treated is primarily to maximise public safety. In today’s age, the timing between time of death and final burial or cremation can often extend passed the recognised 4-7 day period and go into on occasions weeks. The change in today’s environmental climate along with advances in stronger medicinal treatments means that providing a hygienic treatment service is essential to maintaining a healthy and safe working environment for the Funeral Director. The Hygienic Service that we provide at Mortuary Services helps maintain both public health and that of the Funeral Director.
Where does hygienic treatment help?
Losing a loved one is a traumatic event and it can be even more distressing when a family member is discouraged from viewing their loved one prior to the funeral mainly due to the circumstances of death, for example, death resulting from a long period of illness or an accident resulting in disfigurement.
We at Mortuary Services understand the need for families to view their loved ones in their final resting period and the great value and sense of completeness that they can achieve during this time. Our involvement with our own family Funeral business for over 40 years has allowed us to be fully focussed on providing a compassionate and professional approach to the needs of the family and the Funeral Director.
Do you need to be specifically trained to do this work?
Most certainly. Dorian Harries of Mortuary Services undertook over three years of dedicated training to become a qualified Embalmer which involved attaining a formal qualification issued by the British Institute of Embalmers. This qualification was further enhanced by attaining further specialist qualifications in the field of facial reconstruction while attending courses at the Fountain National Academy in Missouri, USA
